Cake is the gate for every breeding chain, and it needs Honey, Red Berries, Milk, Eggs and Wheat. Milk comes from ranch Pals rather than gathering, which is why a working ranch matters more than a bigger field early on. The links below cover the drop sources for each ingredient.

Why food is the real bottleneck

Every working Pal consumes food, and a hungry Pal stops working and eventually weakens. That makes food production the true limit on how large a base can get, ahead of station count or Pal slots. The practical order is: get a stable berry or wheat farm running, then add a ranch for Milk and Eggs, then start producing Cake — because Cake is the ingredient every breeding chain depends on. Build the pipeline before you build the breeding pens, not after.
